(Round 1-Day 4-Essex v Lancashire)

On Sunday evening all is lost,
Lancashire winning a game they have bossed,
And Dan Lawrence comes out to bat.

Then Monday rolls in, and Essex digs in,
With dreams of a draw and no hopes of a win,
And Dan Lawrence bats on.

The morning is Essex, but wickets eventually fall,
Westley, Bopara, Wheater all victims around the new ball,
But Dan Lawrence bats on.

His captain joins in for some grim attrition,
That lasts until well through the final session,
Still Dan Lawrence bats on.

The draw becomes likely and Lancashire fade,
And the scoreboard is moot for whatever they made,
Yet Dan Lawrence bats on.

The light dims, the players shake,
Five points each, they go home,
And in his dreams, Dan Lawrence bats on.

I was listening to the end of this game on my walk home and was quite taken by the description of how Lawrence had played a chanceless innings as Essex crept towards the draw they eventually earned.
